TCS Shifts Hiring to Smaller Cities

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Asia’s biggest employer of software developers, will shift hiring to low-cost cities in India as it struggles to maintain profitability amid spiralling labour costs.
The company, based in Mumbai, is building campuses and adding workers in cities including Ahmedabad , Pune, Bhubaneswar , Nagpur, Indore and Cochin, chief financial officer S Mahalingam said in an interview. The company’s shares plunged the most in more than two years on Tuesday after earnings missed analysts’ estimates amid rising costs.
Employee costs at Tata Consultancy, which spent $2.8 billion on salaries in the year-ending March, rose 27% last quarter exceeding the 15% increase in profit. While expanding in cheaper cities will help reduce costs, lack of infrastructure and quality of employees may create new challenges, according to Vihang Naik, an analyst at MF Global Sify Securities. “The biggest campuses that we’re building now are in Pune and Ahmedabad ,” Mahalingam said in Mumbai on Tuesday.
“At the same time we are putting pressure on the system and the government to upgrade the infrastructure in these places.” TCS gained 1.47% to Rs 1,048.7 at 12:30 pm in Mumbai after plunging 7.7% on Tuesday after profit missed analysts’ estimates by 3%. The company’s operating margin narrowed by 1 percentage point in the three months ended September 30.
India’s inflation exceeded 9% for a 10th straight month in September, reducing room for the central bank to pause its record interest rate increases and maintaining pressure on wages. Salaries in India are set to rise the most in the Asia-Pacific region this year, according to an Aon-Hewitt survey released on March 8.
Wages are likely to rise at an average of 12.9% in 2011, compared with 11.7% last year, according to the survey of 531 organisations from 18 primary industry sectors in December and January . Chinese salaries may rise 9%, while those in the Philippines 7%, Aon Hewitt said. Tata Consultancy and other Indian software developers “hardly have a choice in terms of this expansion ,” Naik said. “It has to happen in smaller towns.”
Second-tier cities like Jaipur and Ahmedabad have operating costs that are 20-30 % lower than established technology hubs like Bangalore , according to a May report from Everest Group, a Dallas-based firm that advises companies on outsourcing strategies.
TCS, which has 20,000 workers and 17 offices in Mumbai, will increase its workforce in Ahmedabad to 12,000 from 2,000, and add to its “small presence” in Pune with a new facility that can hold 17,000 workers , Mahalingam said.

Eight job interview Tips

If you think that wearing the perfect dress or bragging about your academic pursuits will help you nail the job interview, you are mistaken.
HR managers discuss with Viren Naidu eight job interview goof-ups and tips , usually overlooked by candidates.
The Art of Rambling
Rambling , interrupting the interviewer, and answering a simple question with a fifteen-minute reply – all of these can be avoided if you have thought through and practiced what you want to communicate. Keep your answers succinct, tothe-point , focused and don’t ramble – simply answer the question.
At the same time, it is hard to communicate with someone who answers a question with a word or two. So, even though you shouldn’t talk too much, you do want to be responsive and fully answer the question as best you can.
Weaknesses and Strengths
Only you can recognise your most valuable strengths and hurtful weaknesses . Your weaknesses, if such must come up, should be turned around to positives.
Interviewers are always willing to consider imperfect candidates . No candidate ever has everything the search committee wants.
However, they are never inclined to consider applicants who are imperfect but think they are the best thing going.
If you are missing a key skill or some years of experience, own the weakness, but then describe how your other skills and experiences will help you compensate or catch up quickly.
‘I am Capable of much more’
Overselling skills causes candidates to struggle once they are on-thejob , as they are unable to cope with the expectations from it or causes the interview to go downhill quickly. It is better to commit only to what you have delivered in your previous roles.
This will result in deliveries being stronger, if you do get the job and the fear of failure not being imminent.
You should be able to clearly learn on a new job, as all businesses are different and there is always learning that can happen.
Great Expectations
Today, candidates do not pay much consideration to the job role and industry , as they apply for jobs.
Their consideration is the brand and salary package (average) that they read about through the media. This results in expectations not being met, as they are disappointed with the offer.
Private Affairs
Keep it professional, not personal. Don’t let business decorum disappear even if the interview is in a casual setting.
Refrain from discussing over-the-top personal issues and focus on the position and what you bring to the table.
Benefits and more
Some candidates in their first meeting enquire and emphasise a lot about the policies (leave policy, 5/6 day working, office timings, conveyance, etc), and this creates a wrong and tardy image of the candidate with the interviewer and the race is lost before it actually begins.
There is no harm in enquiring about the policies, working culture, office timing or the compensation strategy of the organisation but as it is rightly said, “Cross the bridge when you come to it” .
Watch that nerve
Companies look for future leaders in the people that they hire.
The interviewees who lose their composure and panic when tested with difficult questions or put under stressful situations, often lose the recruiter’s faith. It is important to be confident.
Incomplete Homework
While we expect the interviewees to come well-prepared for the interviews, it is humanly not possible for a candidate to know everything.
Rather than making up things, it is always appreciated to be honest about what a prospective employee knows and what he/she doesn’t , what he/she can do and what he/she can’t .
Honesty and integrity are the two virtues that we strongly value and look forward to on-boarding the people who demonstrate these qualities.

PSU banks on hiring spree, to recruit 45,000 personnel in FY’12

Faced with human resource crunch public sector banks are planning to hire about 45,000 personnel during 2011-12 to meet workforce requirement.
“Approximately 45,000 officers and staff would be recruited by (nationalised) banks this year,” Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) director, M Balachandran told media.
The institute, promoted by PSU banks and the Reserve Bank of India, has been providing assistance to these organisations in selection, promotion and placement of employees since 1984.
A large number of employment opportunities have emerged in the banking sector owing to branch expansion by various lenders, business growth and aggressive marketing, he said.
Balachandran, former Chairman and Managing Director of the Bank of India, said recruitment would also fill the gap created due to large scale superannuation in many banks.
At the same time, in a bid to increase fee-based income, banks have started activities like distribution of insurance policies, mutual fund schemes and other financial products.
This has necessitated recruitment of some specialised manpower in those segments, he added.
In a bid to standardising recruitment process and fill up vacancies faster, IBPS will conduct common entrance tests for officers and employees from July.
Those appearing in the exams will be judged on the basis of a scorecard and banks in need of people can call the successful ones for interview on that basis, he said.
Currently there are 26 public sector banks including six associate banks of State Bank of India (SBI) but IBPS exam would be for the 19 nationalised banks only.
SBI and its associates conduct their own exam and have different service conditions and benefits from nationalised banks.

Government woos professionals for top job at NHAI

The government will allow directors of grade-A Public Sector Undertakings and also private infrastructure companies having at least Rs 2,000 crore annual turnover and officials above the rank of additional secretary to apply for the post of NHAI chairman, in a move aimed at attracting professionals for the job.
The process to invite applications is expected to start next week to meet the deadline set by PM Manmohan Singh to fill the vacancy. NHAI has been without a chairman for the past one year and at present the highways secretary has additional charge of chairman. Sources in the highways ministry said the proposal to widen the eligibility criteria has been approved by the law ministry.
As per the new norms, anyone who has served as a director in a grade-A PSU for at least three years would be eligible to apply. Earlier, the post was reserved for only serving secretaries. A source said that under the revised norms, an applicant should have experience in infrastructure sector or in infrastructure financing. “This has been done considering the skill one needs to head this premier infrastructure agency,” he added.
The directors of private infrastructure companies should have experience in the infrastructure or infrastructure financing sectors. There are more than 35 infrastructure companies in India which have over Rs 2,000 crore turnover. The eligibility conditions for bureaucrats have also been expanded. Now officials of the rank of additional secretary and above can apply.
“Since persons from the private sector will be allowed to become chairman, there are certain conditions to ensure that the outgoing chairman does not serve the interest of any private entity. Therefore, he will not be allowed to join any private company that is involved in any business with NHAI for three years after he leaves the agency,” said an official. The new chairman will have a fixed tenure of three years, extendable by two years.
